CARING FOR MATURING MELANIN-RICH SKIN

CARING FOR MATURING MELANIN-RICH SKIN

Melanin is a substance in your body that is responsible for providing pigmentation to your skin. If you are more likely to tan rather than burn in the sun, you have skin of color.

CONCERNS FOR MATURING MELANIN-RICH SKIN

Hyperpigmentation

When melanin production increases in a specific area due to trauma (acne, scratches, burns), this leads to dark patches on the skin.

Dryness

Melanin-rich skin tends to be drier as we age. This is due to the lower ceramide level in the top layer of the epidermis.

HOW TO CARE FOR MATURING MELANIN-RICH SKIN

Avoid irritating ingredients such as fragrance, essential oils and drying alcohols. These ingredients can damage your skin barrier by stripping the skin of its natural oils, and lead to more hyperpigmentation.

It’s important to look for ingredients that keep the skin calm and happy, such as ceramides (fatty acids), amino acids (peptides), humectants (glycerin) and tyrosinase inhibitors (licorice root extract). These ingredients help to seal in moisture, brighten the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Most importantly, wear an SPF50. Sunscreen is essential to a skincare routine as sun damage breaks down collagen and can also worsen hyperpigmentation.

You can find the following ingredients in our All-Encompassing Serum:
